Strawberry yogurt is an ultimate treat my mom used to make for me during those few weeks in June when strawberries were in season.
In Ukraine, we didn’t have strawberries from California all year round, so I literally ate mom’s concoction after dinner every-single-night. In June.
Well, when we weren’t making Ukrainian sweet lazy pierogi! She called it “stock up your body with vitamins for winter”.
The only difference, she used sour cream because there was no yogurt. It was world’s creamiest and most natural sour cream from nearby grandma’s farmstand though.
Make my version with yoghurt and you will be blown away!
Ingredients You Will Need
- Strawberries: Fresh or frozen strawberries work like a charm. Local juicy and sweet strawberries are the best because you need the juice of strawberries. Therefore, it’s June dessert.
- Yogurt: Plain yogurt or plain Greek yogurt. It just has to be thick. Use full fat yogurt for creamy results.
- Sweetener: I like maple syrup or cane sugar. Mom used sugar. I do not love the taste of honey in this dessert, however you can use it.
How to Make Strawberry Yogurt
All you have to do is mush teh berries and mix them with yogurt and sugar. Mom always made it right in a mug she served it.
Mush the berries: Place strawberries in a glass or serving dish and cut using kitchen shears until mushy. You can also use a food processor if making multiples but make sure not to over process into complete mush.
Or mash strawberries with a muddler right in a mug. You could even use leftover compote from Greek yogurt cheesecake but then don’t add sugar.
Sweeten it: Add maple syrup and stir well with a long spoon.
Mix: Add yogurt and stir to combine. That’s it!
Serve immediately. You can adjust sweetness to taste, top with whipped cream, cacao nibs or chocolate chips. I like to keep this strawberry yogurt simple as good quality strawberries are SO good!
FAQs and Expert Tips
- Use sour cream instead of yogurt for a richer but less healthy treat.
- You might have to adjust sweetener to taste depending on how sweet your strawberries are.
- Consider having dedicated fruit board to avoid strawberries “taste like onion”.
- Top with healthy granola, if desired
- It might make financial sense and you might have fun making Instant Pot yogurt.
What are the best strawberries to use?
It’s best to use local strawberries in season because they are the sweetest and juiciest. “Cardboard” texture like from the grocery store are not good, you need the juices. However, you can use them but taste won’t be the same. Sometimes they are ripe and fragrant.
Frozen strawberries will work even better than store-bought. Just thaw them for 15-20 minutes first.
Can I make it dairy-free?
You can. There is some pretty creamy plant-based yogurt made by Silk and Mason Riviera 1920. I love these brands!
